In the 1950s, air travel was the ultimate expression of glamour. PAN AM airlines offered exclusive services for VIPs and joined forces with Rolex to create a watch that could display the actual time of the city of origin and destination.
The GMT was launched in 1955 with the novel red/blue bezel (Pepsi) and in the early 1980s, the red/black bezel (Coke) was launched.
The GMT fell into Rolex’s category of «tool watches», those that serve a function beyond showing the time. Rolex found the solution for PAN AM workers’ time travel. The GMT indicates the standard time, but has a fourth hand that runs around the dial every 24 hours, which together with the rotation of its bezel makes the time change automatic. It would soon be seen on the wrists of the most famous stars of the 20th century, such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Marlon Brando, Picasso, Eric Clapton… even Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
The value of this Rolex model has gone through the roof.in 2015,the Ref.1675 (marketed for 20 years),sold for 5kUSD Approx, nowadays its price is more than triple.
The GMT-Master represents the last vestige of a reality in which travellers did not wear tracksuits but tailored suits…and a Rolex.
