It was in 1969, in Penang (China), when a teenager called Choo Kee Yin discovered his passion for making shoes. After being the best in his town, in 1973 he was sent to study in London. He started at the Leather Trades School and on a trip to the Andalusian city of Cordoba he discovered his passion for leather. He returned to Penang after graduating from Cordwainers, but London was calling him back and by 1998 he had his business up and running.

He had a relationship with Sergio Rossi, and saw in Manolo Blahnik a rival, he was the only one who created fashion in footwear. A call from Diana of Wales changed the course of his story, as she wanted to receive him personally to wear his designs.

The first boutique opened at 42 Knightsbridge and by the 1990s, Tamara Mellon had the help she needed to create the empire she has today.

In 1997 Jimmy Choo was creating 3,000 pairs of shoes, in 2001, 73,000 pairs and in 2013, 125,000.

On 04/02/2007 the firm was sold to a Saudi Arabian investment fund for 336 million USD. Tamara Mellon remains a vital part of the firm’s management. Jimmy Choo runs the business from its boutique in Bayswater.
